We’d been training for a few months, given the newness of Corinne’s suit, and the fact that unlike those of what Amy, Alexis and I wore, Corinne’s suit was strictly combat, and that meant she couldn’t just pick it up wear it and go. The one thing that I had made sure to design into her suit was that the weapons were all energy based, and the energy could vary depending on what was getting attacked.
The armor that Corinne wore was something like Amy’s suit, an entire experiment that was constantly being upgraded and up dated, and of course all of the suits were modular, which means that they could be adapted to everything. The armor was a cloth to metal flex type, one that would be flexible like cloth, yet when attacked would become as hard as metal and deflect to a point. The one thing that I loved about the suit was the golden hue of her armor, and the fact that her visor was something different that none of the rest of us had in the least.
“Damn it” Corinne stated as she stepped back bringing her arm up and pointing the arm cannon towards the sky. “I still have a problem with the targeting system, it’s off by a few degrees, and it seems that every time that you adjust it, it goes right back.”
I walked over from the table that I had set up out back and took a look at her arm. I plugged in a reader and looked at the display. I went into the programming and saw what the problem was. “Ah it would figure, something that I hadn’t thought of before, it seems that everything was calibrated right, but there a variance now through an inter-dimensional shift. It’s something that I didn’t think was going to matter before, but it seems that it really does matter, and now it needs to be dealt with.” I told her as I unplugged and went over to the table and got on the laptop that I had there.
Now considering the level of tech that this world had, I actually needed something a lot more advanced than what they had available, for that I had brought forth from the other world one that was far more advanced and could be able to help out with all of the suits that we had here.
I quickly made a patch and uploaded it to the scanner device I had, then plugged it back into Corinne’s suit and uploaded it directly to the spot that needed it. I stepped back and had Corinne wait a couple minutes for the system to adjust to everything. Once that was done, Corinne turned to face the target and took aim. The end of the cannon expanded slightly and an energy blast flew forth and struck the target and hit it dead center, blowing it apart. I walked over and scanned the energy signature of the pieces that were on the ground, it showed exactly everything that I thought it would. “Great everything is just as I thought that it might be.” I stated as I walked back over to the laptop to enter everything in.
I had wanted to run more testing, however that wasn’t going to happen, since it seems that someone didn’t like the peace that was going on in town. Amy came running up to the door to let me know. “Alex, we’ve got trouble going on right now in town.”
I looked at her. “I take it that there’s nothing specific that’s being told about it?” I asked.
She looked at me and leaned against the window. “I’m sorry but I think that the reporter running from a big gun aimed at them would be incentive for them to get out of there.” She told me, meaning that since they ran, there wasn’t that much information, which means that we’d be heading in blind, perfect, I hated when that happened.
I looked over at Corinne. “Well looks like it’s going to be trial by fire now, which means that everything that happens to you out in the field, we record everything so that if something goes wrong we can either do in the field solving, or figure everything out after we get you back here.” I told her.
About fifteen minutes later with Corinne being held as we flew over the town, we arrived right on Main St in Martinez, and sure enough there was the nut case with the big gun, and yes this gun was big. Plus it was also a laser weapon of sorts, something that shouldn’t even be on this planet at all. Question in my mind became how in the world did this person (since I couldn’t see their face at all), however right then we needed to get things handled. “I’ve registered the weapons energy signature and adapted our shields to it, gotta love the modular.” I stated with a smile no one could see. “So don’t worry about getting hit, your shields will just absorb the energy. Now you two,” I said point at Alexis and Amy. “Help get the people out of here. We’ll take their attention and make sure that that person shoots at us instead.” I told them.
I waved Corinne with me and started heading towards the shooter. “Well short of blowing them up, what do you think…” I never got to finish the sentence as the shooter pointed the gun at me and fired.
I knew that the shields had taken in the energy, but what I had forgotten about had been the kinetic energy, namely since I had gotten a punch like nothing that I had ever felt before. I got gut punched right into the side of a parked car which, along with me inside of it, got slammed right into a store front and wall. Not only was the air knocked out of me at that point, but I was in such a daze I really had no idea what in the world was going on, plus to top things off, my suit had gone out, and was only just rebooting on me. Once the comms were back up, I reconnected with everyone. “Sorry about that if anyone other than me got hit.” I said as I pushed myself out of the wreckage that had come about became of me and the car slamming into the building.
I stepped out only to see that everyone else had also been hit, my suit had only been damaged from the impact and everything else that came after. “OK that didn’t work right, let’s try this one more time, only this time, we learn from our mistakes and do this right.” I stated as I headed right for the person.
They noticed me, but a second too late as I came in and grabbed the gun, right as the person was hit from a blast from Corinne’s energy cannon, not the hard energy that created something different, but the energy from like an E.M.P. blast in purple form. Their gun stayed in my hand, however as they flew back and smacked into the tree that had been right behind them. Stunning to say, but the impact of person to tree actually didn’t do that much, at least not as much as it should’ve in the first place.
Once Amy and Alexis had gotten everyone clear, even after they had been hit themselves, they came in and joined the battle that was taking place. “Just what in the world was that energy that you fired?” Amy asked Corinne.
“Electro Magnetic Pulse beam. Figured that I they had any electronic gear on them, it’s now fried from that, of course I didn’t know that the beam was going to do that though.” Corinne stated.
I tried walking to the person, but that idea was fast killed, as the person brought up yet another weapon that seemed to fold out to a much larger size before firing it at me, and once again I was off and this time I slammed into a tree instead. “OK this shit has got to stop.” I stated as I got up. I had thought that the suit had compensated, but then I looked at the readings and noticed that there had been a different energy signature. Because of that, my suit had been damaged from it, the suit was repairing, but at the same time, everyone else had been shot as well.
When I got up, I looked around and noticed that everyone was getting the worst of it this time since I hadn’t known about the different energy signature. “Everyone call out.” I shouted.
“I’m still here, though at this point I’m wondering for how long.” Amy stated.
“Still kicking ass, for the most part, though this jack ass is starting to make us look bad.” Alexis stated.
The only one that hadn’t said anything had been Corinne. However when I looked, I noticed that her suit hadn’t been damaged in the least, at least till I scanned it, that’s when I noticed that there was a problem and did a remote reboot of her suit. Corinne had been hit with her own weapons energy, and that right there was something that I had only shortly thought about when making her weapon was only the feedback from it in the first place. Once Corinne was back up and running, I helped her up and looked her right in the eyes. “Let’s see if this person can take a hard impact.” I said and stood back.
Corinne took aim and just pointed her arm at the person. Next thing that happened was a shot of energy that came out and a fiery explosion around the person, with them flying back out and in flames, hitting the building and shattering the windows all around us. Corinne I could tell was looking right at me. “How as that?” She asked me.
I walked over to where the impact had been made and looked around, there was nobody there, and I know I had seen someone fly out of the explosion. Right as I switched to full combat mode, something made impact right to my left side and sent me right into a parking meter of all things. “OK wasn’t paying attention, that’s not going to happen again.” I said as I got up from the ground and looked around. I noticed that this person was about to fire again. “Alright, time to take the toys away.” I said as I fired my wrist grapple and snagged the gun and pulled it out of the person’s hand. Once the attention went back on me again, I knew we had it. “Corinne fire again, full yield, and don’t worry about me.” I told her.
Corinne took aim once again and just fired, and kept firing, shot after shot hitting the person in a no hold barrages, the only thing that was covering the entire place was nothing but explosions and slight flame and that was it, nothing else.
I got up and went over to Corinne who wasn’t letting up once. I x-rayed the area and saw that the person had a hard time even trying to get up in the first place. However even through all of that I saw that they were still moving. This person had personal micro shields. This isn’t something that one can be able to get around here. I thought, something was not only wrong, I had a feeling that something else was going on here. I took out two things that I knew were going to be helping out here, one of them was an em pulse disk, the other was an em pulse shield. Something that would normally be used to keep a person safe from the effects of a pulse, however if the shield was surrounding the one where the pulse was going to be used in the first place, it would be completely reverse and everyone out side of the shield would be kept safe. I knew that there was a bit of a delay to the pulse so I trigger it first and tossed it, then I walked over and arranged the area of the shield and placed it on the ground then activated it. The shield went up after the last attack flew through and now who ever this person was, was now trapped.
No one said anything, and the person was now slowly getting up, right as the pulse went off, and not only did it cancel out the suit, but at the same time it caused a feed back that seemed to fry everything, and you could see the electrical arc cover the entire body. This was something that I had seen before on a different world, but I honestly didn’t think that it would happen this time. I walked back over to Corinne and let the pulse do its work completely.
Amy and Alexis walked over to us and stood next to us as we all watched what was going on. “So any idea yet who they are or who they’re with at all?” Amy asked.
“No idea, but that’s something that I do intend to find out.” I stated as I walked over to the edge of the field. “Alright considering that your entire suit it looks like is shut down, I want to know who you are and who you’re working with. After all the level of the tech that you’re wearing isn’t something that is at all normal, and there’s something wrong with that, because it doesn’t belong on this world. So who are you and who are you working for?” I asked.
The person lifted their head up, and I noticed that the head piece was loose, and slowly they pulled it off to reveal a woman’s face. “They’re coming for her again. They know what you did, and they want you dead.” That was the only thing that was said before she passed out.
I walked back over to the girls and was about to say something before I picked up a sound and a direction that it was coming from. “You’ve got to be kidding me!” I stated as I looked up towards the sound and saw what was coming. “Corinne these morons are coming for you. We need to head these guys off before they do something that they’re going to regret.” I said as I called the glider over and got on.
Once into the air, I noticed that the choppers that were heading towards us had not only stopped in mid air, but at the same time turned around and headed off, since they knew for a fact that we’d be coming towards them.
After about twenty minutes, the chopper arrived as a warehouse and we landed about a block away already knowing that they were going to be ready for us. “Corinne I need you to come with us yes, but to hang back. We already know that these clowns want you, but for some reason for the love of me I’ve no idea why they want you at all. So for now, just hang back, and considering that you happen to be the now major fire power of this team, I have a feeling that if everything goes south, that you’ll be taking everyone in that building out.” I said. Corinne didn’t say anything but nodded.
I should’ve realized that right from the start, the entire thing was going to go south fast. This wasn’t something that should’ve happened, but considering that we had no idea in the world what was happening, I should’ve expected right in the first place. The gear that they had was like nothing that was on this world at all for the level that it was at, and I knew that there was no one outside of this building that even knew about it in the first place except for those that were already here.
The moment that my foot stepped right through the door, the attack started taking place, and we got hemmed in. I had my gun out, but it wasn’t doing a damned bit of good considering that I couldn’t see anything that was going on here at all. Our comms got jammed for all of about five seconds before I canceled that out and regained that ability again. “Damn, you would think that these guys would know a few things, guess they really don’t know anything at all here right now.” I stated as I checked over all of my systems. Turned out that they had tried to block all of them, but that was quickly over turned.
I looked around and scanned the place, and noticed that there was nothing that I could be able to do to stop them, but then it was then that I realized something, they were leaving a path open, they wanted to make sure that Corinne came back to them, and they couldn’t understand why in the world that she wasn’t stepping through. “Corinne, we’re pinned down here, but I have a feeling that they don’t know about you or the new suit that you’re wearing, not only does it have a personal shield, but at the same time that shield will also protect you against em pulse shots. Basically it’s the same shield that I had used before on that other girl, but for you the effects are constant as long as you suit is active, namely considering the em blaster that you have in that arm cannon you’ve got.” I told her. “So come on in and show these idiots what they’re really screwing with, let lose.”
That right there was the damn breaking. Corinne’s suit was not only new, this was what it had been designed for in the first place, when she came in, it wasn’t like anything that anyone had ever seen coming. She not only came in firing, at the same time, she used each of the four cannons that she had and switched between them in rapid fire like crazy. She was jumping around and flipping and firing and a lot of the shots that were fired at her missed completely, for the ones that did hit her, they just dispersed along the suit becoming nothing. The rage that I could see in her eyes was something that I could tell had been pent up for years, thinking that there was no one out there that knew what was going on that would come to find her and free her from the hell that they had put her in. They were feeling the effects of what had been done to her in the first place, and even that was something that I was thrilled not to be on the other side of that emotional force.
Once everything had stopped and Corinne was looking around for more people to lash out on, I knew that there was no way we could come out from hiding. “Corinne.” I called her. I looked at her through the HUD and what I saw in her eyes was pure rage, and nothing but. I stepped out and the moment that she saw me, her arm cannon went right for me, but she didn’t fire. “It’s alright, you’ve won, they’re down and done. They’re not getting back up.” I told her. I walked slowly towards her and, put my hand on the top of the arm cannon and to the side and slowly push it down. “Everything is going to be OK.” However I was wrong, this was going to be something that was going to be extremely hard for her to come back from. “It’s all over now.” I said softly.
Amy and Alexis came out and over to us, they took Corinne out of the there while I looked around the place, and that was when I noticed there was one person that had suffered, but was still around and watching us. “Whoever is behind this, since I know that you’ll live, let them know that I will be personally coming after them, and that they won’t be able to hide from me at all.”
The guy laughed slightly. “Do you honestly think that this is going to be the end off all of this, they will still come for her, and there’s not a damned thing that you can do about it.” He said.
I took my stun plasma gun and pointed it at him. “I already know all this, however they still will never stop me.” I said as I shot him right in the chest.
I walked out of the place and saw the girls getting ready to leave, I looked around and knew that this was only going to be the start of everything, and to be honest, this was going to be one challenge that was going to be very different. “Game on mother fuckers.”
